EPSO tests: limits on automatic termination and human review
EPSO announces a decision on automatic termination of online tests, covering necessity and proportionality, candidate information and opportunities for human review.

According to EPSO’s official notice on EU Careers, the office’s Management Board adopted Decision 1/2026 on 20 October 2026 concerning automated decision-making in online tests for EU selections organised by EPSO. The measure consolidates and clarifies rules and procedures for automatically terminating test sessions. This possibility concerns risks to test integrity or security that cannot otherwise be prevented: termination must be limited to clearly defined and verifiable cases where it is necessary and proportionate to protect the test’s integrity, security or fairness.
The notice states that candidates must be informed about the purpose of automated decision-making, the circumstances in which it may occur and its consequences, together with opportunities to contest it and obtain human review. Automatic termination of a session alone will not automatically exclude a candidate from the competition.
EPSO announces publication of the decision in the Official Journal of the European Union for 6 November 2026, with entry into force on the same day. The decision has therefore been adopted, while its entry into force remains tied to publication. The full decision has not been consulted; the provisions described are based on the institutional summary.
